I founded New Vision Landscaping in 2017 with the vision of providing quality craftsmanship and creating an opportunity for those that are involved.

Growing up I always wanted to own a business. I had a name picked out back in high school, it was New Vision Development. I really didn’t know what that business even would be, but I had a name already! At the age of 18, I began my landscape endeavors by working for Dorshak Family Tree Service. Mainly hauling logs and brush on the ground. Watching the guys swinging from the tree’s inspired me to take it further and learn how to be a climber/tree surgeon. I soon took on an Arborist position at David J. Frank and gained a lot more valuable experience with a high level of expectations. From there I took on a position at Spring Gardens, quickly becoming a lead foreman for the construction/softscape side of the business.

I soon found myself working part-time and taking on a fair amount of side jobs (all tree trimming and removal). I was starting to head in the direction of going on my own but wasn’t sure I was quite ready for that yet. One evening my girlfriend (now wife) was sleeping over and we were suddenly awakened by a loud noise coming from the kitchen. I ran over to it and found that the coffee grinder was on. It wasn’t on a timer or anything, it freaked us out a bit. Now, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with anything. Well, I took that as a sign, “Jimmy it’s time to grind”! I decided to get serious about the business and created New Vision Landscaping LLC about a month after that. My nephew Keegan became a partner not too long after and quickly established himself as an integral part of the company.

We met Michael Davis, owner + founder of Emerald Gardens, in our second year of business. Michael and his business focused on design and horticulture, we were a perfect match, being that we focused on construction and installations. We began working together, combining our strengths creating an incredible partnership. The foundation of the company was now complete, and we began to quickly grow.

We have since hired exceptionally talented team members that have important roles in the New Vision family. Gary Heinrichs and Michael Scorsone, to name a few. We are extremely grateful for every employee and customer that has been a part of this journey!

We look forward to becoming the landscape professionals you come to know and count on!

I always had a feeling that college would not be my path to success. Shortly after graduating high school, I joined my uncle Jimmy in the landscaping industry at the small company he worked for. James had been working in the field for many years and taught me almost everything I know about quality landscaping. Outside of our professional work together, my uncle Jimmy has also taught me a lot about responsibility, accountability, and dependability. In 2017, when James decided to start his own landscaping business, he asked me if I was interested in joining him on this endeavor, to which I happily agreed. Throughout our years of growth as a company I have grown much as a person. I’ve taken all I’ve learned from conquering the challenges of running a business and applied them to the challenges of life.

I’ve always felt a need to help the people I care about. Taking part in the business has given me the opportunity to help others while also providing for myself. It is extremely gratifying to give people a space to grow and to earn a decent living. As we’ve grown more successful as a business, we’ve even been able to provide much along the lines of extra gifts and benefits. As we continue to grow, my hope is to provide even more benefits to our employees. Eventually, I would like to see this business become one that helps its employees and helps people in need, in some way or another.

HISTORY: Michael Davis, head landscape designer at New Vision Landscaping and lifelong horticulturalist, has been honing his skills and extensive horticulture knowledge practically since he could talk. His grandfather owned a 150-acre nursery in the Franklin area, where Michael spent a lot of his childhood learning to care for plants. Michael, finding a calling in his family’s work, went on to participate in a horticultural science program in high school, and eventually to a career in the landscape design field. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, Michael worked for numerous large landscaping companies, keeping his knowledge of plants and landscape materials up to date along the way. In the 90’s Michael started his own landscape design company, providing quality designs for clients and other landscaping companies alike. In 2018 he joined us at New Vision Landscaping and the rest is history!

DESIGN PROCESS: To start, you and Michael will set up a date and time to meet and discuss your project. At this time, Michael will also email you a questionnaire that is designed to give him a better understanding of who you are and your design/aesthetic preferences. Next, you and Michael will meet at the designated time to discuss these questions and look at the areas to be transformed. Once Michael has a clear understanding of the project, he will begin drawing up the design and putting estimates together. Upon your approval of the design and estimates, a timeline will be given for the project’s completion. Michael will be on site often, ensuring the crew has a clear understanding of the project.
Ever since I was a child I have been working on cars and small engines, my father and I used to do this together growing up and even then, as I got older, turned to doing it professionally where we opened our own business together.
As time went on, I discovered an opportunity in the landscaping industry that I wanted to try out. I ended up working with them for 6 years and developed a passion for the lawn and maintenance department. Shortly after this, I reconnected with an old friend James Jasso. James then went on to tell me what New Vision Landscaping was all about, and the rest is history.

Currently, I am the maintenance operations manager here at New Vision Landscaping. I handle all the mowing accounts we have, along with maintaining client relationships to ensure our quality and customer satisfaction. Given my background in mechanics I also maintain all the equipment we have, this keeps our employees safe during operation, but also helps us continue to our goal which is to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Seeing as I found my home here at New Vision Landscaping, I would like to grow more into sales and challenge myself with all the dynamics that make up this company. I feel there are many ways to grow here, and I consider myself a lifetime employee and honored to be part of this small business family.

New Vision Landscaping has been not only a job for me but a family as well. I started working with them during the startup, doing seasonal landscape work and designing this website. Little would I ever have imagined it would grow to such heights, each year taking on new responsibilities and in time becoming a year-round employee.
What I love most about my job is having the ability to be surrounded with nature every day and the freedom to express myself artistically within this company.
My goals are too continue learning more about Midwest horticulture with Michael Davis meanwhile, maintaining my education in graphic & web design.
Since my first job ever was working at a nursery called Plant Land, I quickly then discovered my allure to grow and care for plants. After years of hard work with New Vision Landscaping, I gladly took on a leadership role offered to me in Softscape installation and the logistics involved.

Company Outings!

Every year, in the Fall, after our extremely busy Spring and Summer months, we like to plan a company trip to thank our employees for all their hard work. Our first ever official company outing was a fishing charter out in Port Washington. We all went out for food, stayed overnight in a hotel, and then woke up at 4:30am for a 5 hour trip out on Lake Michigan. We caught all kinds of salmon and trout, all of which was cut and prepared for us to take home. Most of us got pretty seasick and we had some good laughs about that. It was an awesome feeling to pull in those large fish. Some of us were new to the feeling and some of us veterans, but each of us enjoyed it all the same.

This past year, after a successful season, we were able to afford a larger trip for our employees. We took a trip to Las Vegas! We stayed at the Luxor Hotel (the big pyramid!). There weren’t many activities planned so our group split up and did whatever interested them most. Some gambled quite a bit, some won and some lost! Some spent lots of time relaxing in or around the hotel pool. Others took a guided tour through and around the Grand Canyon. We all got together for a large festival on Fremont Street and had quite a difficult time finding our way back to the hotel (which made for some fun stories after the fact). We got to enjoy a few nice meals together as a whole group. It was a great way to build memories together outside of our usual day-to-day responsibilities.

Old Milwaukee Pavers

Established in 1913, G. Groppi Food Market has been a staple in the Bayview area for a long time. When a building has been around that long, people take notice of even the smallest changes. In the fall of 2021, Anne Nehring, current owner of the food market, decided that it was time to replace the turf area outside her store. While this change was by no means small, people certainly took notice of New Vision’s patio space addition to the iconic food market. The patio even found a place in the 2022 summer edition of the Bay View Historian (BVHS-Historian-2022-06_email.pdf (bayviewhistoricalsociety.org) See page six). What made the patio space especially unique was the use of repurposed bricks salvaged from locations all over Milwaukee by our friends at The Brickyard Inc.

The use of repurposed bricks posed a number of interesting challenges for the New Vision Crew. For starters, even at the time of their creation most of the bricks were different sizes, being manufactured by different companies. Over time the bricks had been weathered through use, furthering the differences in shapes and sizes. This made piecing together the bricks especially challenging. On top of that, each brick is stamped with the name of their manufacturer. Out of respect for the original manufacturers, and with general aesthetics in mind, each brick was placed with the manufacturers name facing the same direction. This way each manufacturer could be clearly identified by any passing admirer of the patio. New Vision Landscaping was happy to take on these challenges and they were well worth the efforts. The use of repurposed bricks gives the appearance that the patio space has aged right alongside G. Groppi Food Market from the start.

By now you’ve got a fresh, green, beautiful looking yard, but it will only stay that way with a proper watering schedule. Now comes the time for you to ensure your investment in a new lawn was worth it. For the first two weeks your sod will need to be consistently soaked, soaked but not muddy. You’ll want to run a sprinkler over the entirety of the area that was replaced with sod (this may require you to shift the sprinkler to provide full coverage) for 10-15 minutes, at least three times a day. After this crucial first period, for the next two weeks, you can relax just a little bit. Your lawn has started to develop its roots! Now, you’ll want to water your lawn 1-3 times per day, however, be sure to check for moisture first as there may be days you won’t even need to water it. At this point your new lawn has had a full month to develop its roots and by now. If you’ve kept up with the watering, they should be healthy and strong. For the rest of this first season, you’ll want to water only when your lawn is dry (as any lawn would require). Now you’ve got your new lawn and you know how to keep it looking great for years to come.

First 2 Weeks

-It is crucial to properly water your new sod for the first month. Immediately after the installation of sod, soak thoroughly. Your goal is to keep the soil underneath your new sod wet, approximately 4-6” deep. If you allow it to dry out during this time it will begin to brown out, shrink, and possibly die. To achieve this, you will need to water 3-5 times per day. Approximately 10-15 minutes per session, depending on the season and the rainfall. Do your best to keep this schedule for the first two weeks. Try to stay off your lawn during this time as to not leave depressions. At the end of this two-week period, if you have carefully followed these steps your lawn should be ready for a haircut (mow). Refer to mowing category below. It is recommended, not to cut your new grass below 2” the first few times.

Weeks 3 and 4

-During week 3, you can begin to decrease your watering to 1-3 times per day and skip a day if the sod isn’t drying out. Week 4 bring it down to 1-2 times every other day. Mornings and evenings are the most ideal times of day to water.

Rest of the Season

-Throughout the first season of your new lawn, for optimal results you will want to give deep watering less frequently. Giving your lawn a deep watering will help the roots stretch and reach for the moisture, developing a deep root system. Keep in mind after the first two weeks, it is alright to let your lawn dry out from time to time but if your lawn begins to look dry, be sure to water it.

Mowing

-When mowing is needed (grass is over 3.5”), remember to make sure you allow your lawn to dry out enough to be able to firmly walk on it without creating depressions. Be careful the first few times mowing, if any sod is lifted or moves from the mowing, simply put it back into place and it should be just fine.

Tips

–If possible, avoid walking on your new lawn during the first 2 weeks. After the first 2 weeks avoid walking on your new lawn for another month, except when you give it time to dry before your mow.

-Mornings and evenings are the best time to water new sod.

-Timers make life much easier!

-After 6-8 weeks of the initial installation, you can apply the appropriate nutrients for the time of season.
